Webb3 aug. 2013 · Earlier today after a short 5 minute run, I could hear the starter humming/whining after I turned the key/motor off. If I turned the key back to the "on" position the motor would instantly try to start. The only way to stop it was to kill the batteries with the Perko. The starter gear would mesh fine with the flywheel BUT the gear would get not retract back into the starter, it would get stuck in the teeth of the flywheel. (I had never seen that before). That is logical. My bendix disengages before the engine fires. I would say that maybe 5-10 seconds and the bendix disengages everysingle time. No chance for the engine to fire.

The issue is the starter bendix doesn’t always match up with the gears on the flywheel (not sure if correct name). So I have to manually rotate the flywheel a little bit and try again. If you are lucky, the bendix is just stuck. Try to turn the motor over by hand with the starter loose. Hopefully..... If the bendix is stuck/broken, they are easy to clean or replace. Of course you need to check out if the purple wire to the solenoid is getting power after the start position is released on ignition switch. You can hook a test light to purple wire with long enough wires to see from drivers seat.
